Although you might not realize it, if you suffer from anxiety, you have a superpower. Or at least, you have the potential to make anxiety your superpower.
When it comes down to it, anxiety is about control. You can’t control the situation or other people, so you satisfy your desire for control by thinking about every little detail over and over again. The problem is that this kind of worry fuels the anxious mind and makes it stronger. It’s like adding gasoline to an already raging fire.
What started out as a desperate quest for control results in you feeling out of control. And in fact, you are out of control if you allow your thoughts to run wild. You tend to think too much instead of taking action. You let your thoughts control you, and as a result, you end up paralyzed.
How do you break the cycle? How do you overcome anxiety and take back control of your runaway thoughts?
Keep reading and listen to the Chronically Conscious podcast to learn how to make anxiety your superpower.
Shifting from Anxious to Aligned
In one of my previous posts, I talked about overcoming anxiety.
Many people who suffer from anxiety allow their thoughts and feelings to escalate to the point of experiencing panic attacks. Heck, I even ended up in the emergency room with panic attacks a couple of times! You can read my story of dealing with stress, anxiety, and panic attacks in my book, Stress Size: How My Hunger for Control Almost Killed Me.
That was before I learned to control my anxiety and use it to my advantage. I’ve put all of the best anxiety relief and stress management strategies together in the Anxiety Remedy. You can get the complete Anxiety Remedy here.
NOTE: If you’re experiencing panic attacks, you should seek help to get those under control. But it’s also helpful to know how we can transform anxiety into a desirable asset so that you no longer have to be afraid of your anxious feelings.
Here’s how you can make anxiety your superpower.
1. Understand the benefits of anxiety.
To learn how to make anxiety your superpower, it helps to understand the benefits of anxiety.
Yes, anxiety can be useful. However, there’s a fine line between obsessing and worrying vs. utilizing anxiety as a valuable asset to be productive at work or in our personal lives.
Some of the benefits of anxiety include:
- Problem-solving
- Thinking things through
- Planning ahead
- Paying careful attention to detail
- Possessing a keen sense of intuition or having “gut feelings” that help guide action
- Having a deep understanding of problems, people, or situations
- Anticipating the worst, and therefore being prepared for every possible outcome
- Being hopeful for the best
- Developing a deep appreciation for when things go well
2. Be aware of your thoughts and take aligned action.
The key to controlling the anxious mind is taking action. If you can learn to control your thoughts, then you can make anxiety your superpower.
Perhaps you’ve been told that anxiety is a bad thing, and it can be if you allow it to control you. However, anxiety is just a form of thinking, and thinking is not a bad thing. In fact, thinking can be productive if you think about the right kinds of things in the appropriate quantities.
Thinking can be especially productive if you use it as the foundation for taking action. You don’t have to be afraid of having an anxious mind if you can learn to control it. Using positive affirmations can help shift negative thought patterns.
By developing awareness of your anxious thoughts and taking aligned action, you can make anxiety your superpower. Learn more about how to take aligned action in the Anxiety Remedy.
3. Use your anxiety to your advantage.
All this isn’t to celebrate anxiety, but to help you understand anxiety is simply energy. Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, however, you can channel that energy and make it work for you instead of against you.
Wouldn’t that be a drastic change, being able to decide what to think, instead of worrying yourself to death?
By learning how to make your anxiety work for you instead of against you, you can increase your productivity at work or enrich your personal life.
Some examples of how to use anxiety to your advantage include:
- Taking initiative to start a project and see it through to completion
- Looking at things from multiple angles to cultivate a deep sense of empathy
- Having lots of creative ideas to contribute to the team
- Offering useful advice to your friends and loved ones
- Developing a reputation of being dependable by always being prepared
- Being a high-achiever by continually pursuing excellence
When you shift from anxious to aligned, everyone around you will see how you’ve made anxiety your superpower!
Conclusion
You may naturally have an anxious mind, but you don’t need to be controlled by anxiety. You can control your thoughts and make anxiety your superpower!
